Hairy Heads

Hairy Heads | Layla Holzer 2013

This puppet is the first of a collection I am making called Hairy Heads. Each female puppet with have a head encased and suffocated by hair – hair representing femininity, female status and fertility. The hair suggests an idea of being smothered and bound by the woman’s own gender and supposed roles – which ties into my interest in the uncanny. The puppets will be equipped with things that are stereotypically assigned to women – household items such as pots and pans, irons and cleaning tools, fire-wood to suggest the idea of keeping a house and babies to indicate the female reproduction role.

These puppets will be placed alongside the Hare I have previously made, and will be performed for video and painted from for a momentary narrative.
